What Is MFPP? Composition, Mineral Filler %, and How It Performs

Mineral-filled polypropylene is a two-part material. A polypropylene resin base provides the food-contact polymer and heat tolerance; a natural mineral filler – most often calcium carbonate (CaCO) – is compounded into that resin before the sheet is thermoformed into a container.

Industry practice puts the mineral load at up to 40% of the container by weight, with roughly 60% polypropylene making up the balance – measurably less plastic per box than an all-resin container, and a more sustainable use of polymer. That ratio is the spec most foodservice MFPP is built to, and it is verifiable across major manufacturers’ own material guides.

Mineral filler is not a cost-cutting shortcut – it changes how the container behaves. Calcium carbonate raises the heat-deflection temperature, which is the technical reason an MFPP box holds its shape against a hot entre while thin unfilled plastic containers tend to sag. Mineral loading also stiffens the wall and improves impact strength, so the container resists cracking when a stack is dropped or a freezer cycle works against it. Calcium carbonate used as a plastics additive is FDA-approved for food-contact applications.
