The single most common procurement mistake we see is treating “biodegradable” as one material. The five we run share certifications and the BPI logo, but they are not interchangeable across menu items.

Question 1 — How Many Colors and How Tight a Color Match?

We print 1-6 color flexography on bagasse and bamboo, 1-4 color offset on kraft paper boxes, and 1-6 color UV ink on PLA cups. Delta E 2.5 Pantone colors are approved against your brand swatch before mass run.

Foil stamping, embossing, and UV gloss varnish are available on kraft, paper, and CPLA. Soft-touch lacquer is incompatible with industrial compostability and we will alert you during artwork approval.

Free samples ship to verified B2B addresses; we cover sample cost and you cover the express courier. Every production lot is QC-checked against AQL 2.5 (major) and AQL 4.0 (minor) per ISO 2859-1, with a photo-documented inspection report attached to each shipment.

Defects above the AQL threshold are eligible for replacement or credit at our cost, including return freight. Two-year shelf life applies to most fiber products when stored at <30°C and <70% RH.

FAQ — Biodegradable vs Compostable, Hot Food Safety, Compost Disposal

Navigate the regulatory requirements, material science, and operational realities of transitioning to sustainable food packaging.

Yes, and the distinction matters legally. Biodegradable describes any material that eventually breaks down through microbial action, without a defined time frame or end product. Compostable is the stricter claim: the material breaks down within a defined window (typically 90-180 days in industrial conditions per ASTM D6400) into non-toxic compost. For foodservice claims in the U.S. and EU, “compostable” backed by BPI, OK Compost, or EN 13432 certification is the safer marketing language. “Biodegradable” without certification can attract a regulatory greenwashing review.

It depends on the material. Bagasse and bamboo fiber handle hot soup, ramen, and curry up to 95-100C without leaching or deforming. PLA is the wrong choice for hot food (45C ceiling), while CPLA, kraft with PLA lining, and pressed paper handle 85C – fine for hot coffee and hot sandwiches. If your menu mixes hot and cold, the practical answer is dual sourcing: bagasse or bamboo for the hot side, PLA for the cold side, and a single matching label run so your branding stays consistent across the menu.

Industrial composting takes 60-90 days for bagasse, bamboo and other fiber based products and 90-180 days for PLA, CPLA, and kraft-PLA composites. Backyard composting is slower and not reliable – most PLAs, for instance, require the higher heat of municipal composting to decompose within the recommended period. This is why selecting appropriate material together with a trusted local composting route is more important than a ‘logo’ on the packet.

Sugarcane Bagasse (the fiber left after juice extraction), Bamboo Pulp, Polylactic Acid PLA (made from Corn or Sugar), Crystallized PLA (CPLA), FSC-certified kraft paper with a layer of a very thin PLA (for moisture barrier). Few lines also used the wheat straw, palm leaf or cornstarch blend for niche uses.

U.S. municipalities have begun turning away “compostable” plant-based plastics and putting them back into the blue bin because the composting window for the facility is too short for PLA. Prior to a packaging overhaul, make sure there is a local industry compost facility, that industry accepts your certification (BPI, OK Compost or EN 13432) and that local law has not been changed recently banning bioplastics from the green bin.

Not in most instances. Coated fiber-holding containers contaminated with food remains (such as sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, kraft) are not accepted by typical paper recycling features. Both the PLA and CPLA can be identified using straightforward visual indicators, yet they too are not recyclable into PET or PP streams, and instead require unique industrial composting procedures. The truth regarding the recycle vs compost question is: composting is the designed destination for plant-based food packaging, and measureable control is achieved through on-pack educating correct disposal by consumers.

At full-truckload volume, sugarcane bagasse clamshells are now shipping about the same order-of-magnitude per-unit range as expanded polystyrene foam, with bamboo and CPLA carrying anywhere from a single-digit to low-double-digit percentage premium over competing plastics. Total life cycle costs also include the costs of maintaining compliance in mandated markets, as a non-compostable shipment denied at the border is more expensive than a modestly higher unit price.

50,000 pcs per SKU is our minimum for stock containers to have the custom logo printed on. Under that amount, we typically propose starting with unprinted stock SKUs and then moving to printing on your reorder after the volume is proven.

Some European markets, particularly Belgium and parts of Germany, increasingly recognize TÜV OK Compost HOME or BPI Home certification as the higher standard. Bagasse and bamboo lines can qualify for home-compostable testing; PLA and CPLA cannot reach the home compost window. We can recommend a material mix that earns both labels where the application allows.
