Custom Takeout Boxes — Wholesale Food Packaging by Wanhui
From Generic Plastic Tubs to Branded Takeout — How Restaurants Lock In Repeat Orders
Custom takeout containers do one thing generic distributor-stock cannot: keep your brand alive when the customer gets home. Restaurateurs on Reddit’s r/restaurateur will compare cost/servo for custom-printed takeout containers, but the biggest question is whether they generate incremental walk-ins and delivery-app impressions.
It is structural. A delivery order makes 3-5 separate contact points before the guest opens – the kitchen, the bagger, the courier, the delivery app photo, the dining room table. Custom takeout containers are the only thing that exists at every step; unbranded ones fall into the background, branded ones emphasize recognition each step of the way.
Wanhui has a banner lineup of six product families—hot-food clamshells, hinged-lid bento, clear salad bowls, bagasse compostable trays, kraft bakery and burger containers, plus accessory pouches and sealing film. We are not just printing the logos, we are extruding the sheets, thermoforming the bodies, printing the logo on-site in Longyan in one integrated operation, and exporting from the port in Xiamen to Europe, the Middle East, North & South America, & Oceania.
The custom food boxes on offer here are for restaurants, cafes, semi-formal restaurant chains, street vendors, caterers, hospitals, school cafeterias, coffee-house & grocery prepared foods, express delivery delivery platforms—any operator and channel that needs a branded, biodegradable, food-safe package to deliver real-world results and eat-it-in or take-home performance—from burger & sandwich cartons to institutional lunch and lidded storage boxes.
The branding builds because the same branded container appears in the delivery photo, in the unboxing, and in the recycling bin three more impressions per order than generic disposables ever can. Sustainability claims are transparent when the package is speaking for itself.
You will find evidence in three areas here: a Material Decision Matrix that allows your engineers to specify based on actionable data not assumptions, an MOQ tier window that puts the unit-cost schedule most vendors keep hidden behind a sales inquiry, and a five-market certification map associated with relevant regulation codes.

MFPP vs PP vs Bagasse vs Kraft vs PLA — Material Decision Matrix
Most custom-packaging pages jump right to this wholesale comparison or keep it secret behind a quote request. These five materials cover about 95 percent of restaurant To-go situations; and this table dispenses the values your project-specifying engineer needs to decide on a SKU, before a sales team call.
Read the table across to compare by material; read the table down to compare by the feature that brings you menu-yield – microwave use, leak sensitivity, or end-of-life disposal.

Engineering Patterns
The pattern many buying departments overlook: MFPP is the only choice that delivers microwave oven use at full power, leak-proof hinge seals above 99%, and IML quality graphics one package. Standard Polypropylene is more economical per piece but misses out on the IML and hinge seal.
Application Fit
If your menu is hot and saucy with delivery times above 30 minutes, MFPP is the supplier fit. If your service is cold, clear PP is efficient. If you serve into California, Washington, New York, or EU markets, bagasse makes it through fairness checks without redesign.
“Before we decided on the blend in our hinged-lid line we had tested 14 different MFPP formulas. The hinge had to keep sauce at 110C without busting – most available PP fails that test by your second microwave session. Our choice wins the 5-session test.”
One MFPP, one PP transparent, one bagasse, shipped from Qingdao. You pay freight only.
Wanhui Custom Takeout vs Standard Plastic Tubs — Performance & Cost Reality
One comment summarizes the procurement fact bluntly: “The price from Sysco and Shamrock in my area is $20-25 per sleeve for the same craft on craft pizza box.” Meanwhile, importer markup is the hidden cost the average delivery operator uncovers only after it compares a well-known direct-factory offer.
The table below pits Wanhuimanufacturer-direct approach to two other options a restaurant almost always investigated – universally findable non-printed distributor stock and printed box demand managed through a US-headquartered custom packing dealer.
Direct-factory vs distributor vs printed-reseller — typical 750ml hot-food container at 100k MOQ. Industry pricing references from Reddit r/restaurateur thread (2024) and Wanhui RFQ records (2024–2025).

TCO & Brand-Lift Framework (Silver Tier)
Custom packaging value adds up across five customer experience points kitchen-printer transition, courier-packet transparency, order-photo app-archival, table-unboxing-memory, leftovers storage-batch traceability. Most packaging manufacturers report 15-35 percent brand-recall lift when company’s internal and external branding stations show the same registered logo consistently (industry average, certified materials).
The honest cost-per-case alternative: direct-factory prices arrive at our European, North American, and Asian converters half to one third of common importer quotes, but freight from Qingdao needs an additional 15 to 50 days in transit depending on the end location. Restaurants running on daily inventory levels should buffer a 60-day shelf-life into the first import; operators with warehouse capacity can lean on full unit-cost advantage starting with the second order.
Send your current SKU and we will quote unit cost, freight, and break-even volume within two business days.
Where Wanhui Custom Takeout Boxes Show Up — Four Buyer Tracks
Four separate customer segments use the lineup very differently however, so like-to-like case studies can only serve as plausible usage profiles compiled from our 2024-2025 RFQ documentation across regional food service purveyors, hospital feeders, delivery apps, and US- or HK-based distributors.
Track 1 — Food & Beverage Chain Restaurants
European and US chain restaurants standardizing on a single hot-entree SKU
A chain eater clients will usually specify a frozen run of MFPP hinged-lid clamshell containers (Line 02) across approximately 60 to 200 retail locations, in 3 to 5 stock-keeping units. Convince, the order will include co-branded cups and paper bags as needed to unify the entire takeout branding system. If the same graphic matches the geographic packout rhythm, unit-cost comes in with predictability across turner cycles; color batch across 4 quarterly reorders.
Track 2 — Hospital and School Cafeterias
Institutional buyers procuring against tender specifications
Hospital and institution clients require regulatory documentation that cross-threat a written signature to Wanhui citing the official standards: FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU 10/2011, or GB 4806.7. The company supplier-specific certification reports and migration lab certificates clear audits on markets where the education sector institution can verify migration test success. Quantities come less per location but remain predictable from one annual budget campaign to the next.
Track 3 — Food Delivery Platforms
Cloud-kitchen and delivery-platform operators optimizing leak rate and cube
Delivery technologies are more interested in two numbers – a perimeter leak failure rate per ten-thousand, and pallet cube weight-achievement. We usually combine MFPP hinged-lid clamshells with compatible lids and pull-tab seals to reduce both leak and tamper rates, while assuring consistency of brand and food storage volume across all delivery drivers since the lid carries the printed logo equally no matter whose foodservice logo appears beneath it.
Track 4 — Regional Distributors
EU, Americas, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America distributors
US distributor monthly orders fit in twenty-foot or forty-foot containers, with shipment Incoterm flexibility (C & F or Supplier position terms, DDP when the country allows). Our upload logs include a 6 or 12-digit tariff heading, certificate of origin, food contact approval, and the laboratory tests the preferred port of call requirements.
Tell us your monthly unit count and destination port; we will quote landed cost.
Certifications & Compliance — Multi-Market Approval Grid
The “food-grade” claim that most custom takeout box pages publish is too nonspecific to survive institutional procurement validation. The grid below shows the five regulatory regimes Wanhui certifies to; your procurement team needs to cite the regulation code shown here in a tender submission.
United States
FDA 21 CFR 177.1520
Olefin polymers food contact use — covers PP and PE base resins in all Wanhui plastic containers.
European Union
EU 1935/2004 + 10/2011
General food contact framework + specific plastic FCM regulation. Migration-test reports per batch available on request.
China
GB 4806.7-2016
National standard for plastic food contact materials. Required for domestic Chinese market and many APAC importers.
US / Canada
ASTM D6400 + BPI
Compostable certification for our bagasse and PLA lines. Required for “compostable” labeling claims under FTC Green Guides.
Europe
EN 13432
European compostable packaging standard. Pairs with ASTM D6400 for bilingual labeling on bagasse and PLA SKUs.
Quality System
ISO 9001 / 22000
Quality management + food safety management system. Audited annually.
PFAS regulation is a separate matter now that California buyers (AB 1200, 2021), Washington State (effective February 1 2023), New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Rhode Island, no longer want to buy it at the SKU level. Our entire bagasse, paperboard, and kraft lines are formulated free of intentionally added PFAS; we publish the lot-by-lot test report for any buyer shipping to a PFAS-limited jurisdiction. Tamper-evident options – heat-shrink bands, breakaway seals on hinged covers, per-batch lot codes – are available on every SKU and being progressively adopted by food-delivery platforms in regulated markets.
For operators that promote a curbside recycling or waste stream story, our PP and corrugated fiberboard options are the most accepted; the bagasse line is industrially compostable in markets with municipal facilities. The overall environmental impact of a SKU depends on your logistics distance and local end-of-life infrastructure – we can model either for you on tender.
Procurement Guide — MOQ Tiers, Lead Times, Sample Kits, Incoterms
Most custom packagers bury their MOQ and unit-cost tiers deeper in a quote form than one page. We publish ours here so buyers know what they’re likely to face before an hour is spent preparing an RFQ that may not be aligned with the supplier’s minimum.
MOQ & Unit-Cost Tier Reference (750ml MFPP hinged-lid, 4-color flexo print)
| Volume Tier | MOQ Trigger | Unit Cost Band (USD) | Production Lead Time | Tooling Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stock SKU (no print) | 1,000 units | $0.18 – 0.28 | 3–7 days | $0 |
| Custom-print (flexo) | 10,000 units | $0.14 – 0.22 | 15–25 days | Plate setup, one-time |
| Custom mold + print | 100,000 units | $0.08 – 0.18 | 25–40 days first run | Mold cost, amortized |
| Annual contract | 1,000,000+ units | Quoted per RFQ | Scheduled drops | Included |
The cost bands above are samples, not fixed quotes – the final unit cost number depends on SKU size, paper specification, ink coverage percentage, and freight terms. A specific pricing number will be provided in a quote within two days of a complete RFQ.
Lead Time and Freight Reality
The above production lead times are from the factory only. Sea freight from the Qingdao port offers the following typical transit times from the following destinations: U.S. West Coast 15-25 days; U.S. East Coast 30-40 days; Northern Europe 35-45 days; Middle East 25-35 days; APAC (Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia) 15-25 days; Latin America 35-50 days depending on the destination and route.
Fast ocean freight is available at roughly a 30-50% surcharge if your schedule demands; air freight can work for test-volume SKUs but is rarely justifiable for larger lot sizes.
Incoterms and Documentation
The default condition is FOB Qingdao, suitable for customers with a freight forwarding partner in place. CIF delivery to your port can be prepared within two days. DDP considerations are available for selected markets with done-with-It partner approval. Required documents for customs clearance are on every order and incorporate the invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, food contact cert., and lot-specific test certs.
Sample Kit Policy
We send a free-three-SKU sample kit to registered operators across the world – one MFPP hot container, one PP clear, one bagasse form-fill-and seal container, in your closest size; freight is on you. Typical sites are globally 7-10 days away via DHL or FedEx Express.

What materials can I choose for my custom takeout boxes?
Five main materials cover approximately 95% of use cases: MFPP (modified-block polypropylene) for hot-and-saucy hinged-lid containers; standard PP transparent or black for cold and delivery; bagasse sugarcane fiber for ASTM D6400 + BPI compostable claims; kraft paper with PE or compostable liner for casual and burger applications; PLA for cold retail-shelf use. Material Decision Matrix above summarizes for each temperature range, leak resistance, microwave compatibility, and recyclability.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom takeout boxes?
Stock SKUs no print: 1,000 units. Stock SKUs pre-print on existing molds: 10,000 units. Stock SKUs custom mold plus print: 100,000 units. Annual contract volumes (1M+) unlock the lowest unit-cost tier. We do not enforce a 50K unit minimum for restaurant (non chain) use.
How long does production and shipping take from order placement?
Stock SKUs ship in 3-7 days from PO. Custom-print runs run 15-25 days; first-mold run custom-mold plus print runs run 25-40 days. Sea transit adds 15-50 days depending on destination port. A US West Coast target customer ordering custom print today may receive (delivered) stock on 30-50 days from PO.
Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?
Yes – qualified buyers receive a three-SKU sample kit at no product cost; freight only. The kit includes one MFPP hot container, one PP transparent, and one bagasse compostable. Custom-print samples (with your artwork) require a 5,000-unit minimum and a plate-setup cost that is credited against your first production order.
Are your takeout boxes microwave-safe and leak-proof?
MFPP hot container (Line 02) are microwave-compatible to 130C and less than 1% leak-rate on hot-saucy-line contents on our internal 5-cycle test. The standard (Line 01, 03) PP snow-pack is microwave-compatible to 120C with snap-lid leak rate above 95%. Bagasse is microwave compatible for reheat, but not recommended for full power cook. Kraft and PLA lines are not microwave-compatible.
Do your containers meet FDA, EU, and Chinese food-contact regulations?
Yes. Our PP and MFPP base resins are FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant (olefin polymers). EU 1935/2004 compliant with individual plastics under EU 10/2011 approved (migration test reports on file per lot). Chinese domestic market compliant to GB 4806.7-2016 standards. Bagasse and PLA top lines additionally carry ASTM D6400+ BPI registration (US/Canada) and EN 13432 status (Europe).
How do MFPP, standard PP, and bagasse compare for my menu?
Hot-and-saucy menus that are home delivered and can go through a microwave reheat are ideally served by MFPP hinged-lid containers. Cold salads, cold proteins, and transportation-stable items work fine with standard PP – usually transparent for visual presentation, black for dark-sauces hidden. Bagasse becomes the necessity when you sell into California, Washington, New York, or EU markets with PFAS or plastic-bans; it doubles as a marketing claim for sustainability-conscious brands.
Can I customize size, color, and printing on my containers?
Size customization requires a new mold (100,000-unit minimum). Color customization on existing molds is supported at all orders – Pantone-matched at +/- Delta-E 3. Print methods include flexo (4-6 colors on existing molds), IML for photo-matching on MFPP, and offset on kraft paper lines. We deliver artwork templates per SKU and pre-production mock-up proof.
